Project Info
81 Cannon has served many purposes throughout its history. It’s been the home of various retail ventures from the late 19th century into the 20th century. Just to the west, 83 Cannon was originally designed for dwelling and eventually housed two retail stores. Over time, the buildings were modified, expanded and connected. Prior to the start of the project in 2019, the buildings had been abandoned for over 20 years and had suffered from at least two fires, several hurricanes, and long term deferred maintenance. Whole walls and roofs were missing, and the east wall was sinking, almost melting into the sidewalk.
Thanks to a dedicated owner, and despite a change of contractors mid-stream, this building now serves the Cannonborough-Elliottborough neighborhood, bringing life to Cannon and Smith streets, just as it did in at the turn of the 20th century as a corner grocery store.
