Project Info
This new Charleston Single House is located in a flood prone area, near Colonial Lake. The previous house, a 1950s brick ranch, which sat 7 feet below base flood elevation, was taken down to make way for a new flood proof, low maintenance, hurricane resistant, modern home. The house was designed to fit into the historic neighborhood, while also clearly reading as a 21st century home. Though the house is elevated, it does not tower over pedestrians, thanks to the careful detailing of the foundation walls, ground floor windows, and the location of the piazza door just a few steps up from the sidewalk. The traditional side porch speaks to historic Charleston piazzas, while the L-shaped footprint allows for a modern open floor plan.
