We focus on and have a passion for residential architecture, which requires a different expertise than commercial architecture. Rather than being a jack of all trades, we choose to continually hone our skills and strengthen our resources in residential architecture to better serve our clients.
We are grounded in the construction industry. While working for many years in a design-build firm, I gained a more well-rounded background by being on site almost daily, working with craftsmen to develop creative solutions to challenging problems, coordinating subcontractors and materials, and managing the budgets and schedules… all while working closely with my clients to make all selections and finalize details. That experience is carried forward, for a more collaborative construction process, to ensure your goals are met.
We offer full architectural services. We don’t just draw floor plans and pretty elevations, then leave you on your own to figure out how to make that design a reality. Instead, we will be your advocate in all communication with local municipalities, consultants, and the contractors. By being fully involved, we offer consistent communication and guide you through the entire design and construction process, making the whole experience more enjoyable and less stressful.
We have an understanding of historic homes and the unique approach required with respect to design, materials, and methods of construction or restoration. Armed with the experiences of being on site almost daily during major historic restorations, we work with you to achieve the right balance between preserving the past and restoring the home to fit this generation. This understanding of historic homes also serves well in designing new homes with classic details fitting for the South Carolina Lowcountry.

Historic Renovation
In and around the South Carolina Lowcountry are many wonderful historic homes. These properties require an architect with expertise in historic restoration, preservation, and conservation.
Additions & New Construction
Although new construction seems to be the most straight-forward of these project types, you will greatly benefit from an architect’s expertise through the process. We can walk you through the whole process.
Interior Architecture
This includes fully designing and detailing the interior of a home. LFA can provide options and guidance for selection of all finishes and fixtures and implement them into the design.
Where It All Began
Laura F. Altman, AIA
Laura founded LFA Architecture in 2013, after working in Charleston at Meadors Inc. for almost 10 years. Prior to that, she earned a Master of Architecture from Clemson University in 2004 and B.S. in Design, also from Clemson, in 2000. But it really all began way back in 5th grade, when she first decided she wanted to be an architect and followed up by participating in a mentor program with a local architect.
While it’s not perfect, Laura works to balance the career she loves with her family, her husband and two sons.
